Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation)

For years, I have been wanting to start a yoga regimen. And for years, I have not. My main hindrance has been not having a formal teacher or being able to take formal classes. I always saw yoga as something that would best be done with a yogi(ni)/yoga teacher to guide you in doing the correct postures. However, while attending a workshop here at my internship, I met a woman who assured me that she performed yoga for years with only a book as her resource, and had only recently started attending formal classes. Even then, she has been only taking the classes because she recieved a free coupon. In the spirit of her proactivity, I decided to set aside excuses and start some yoga regimen of some type, even if only a very little.

I decided to start with one of the most popular sequences, Surya Namaskar or Sun Saluation. There are many, many yoga poses, known as asanas. Sun Salutation is a great introduction to the yoga practice and I am looking forward to starting as soon as possible. A picture description of the sequence can be found here. The examples are of stick figures. You can easily google images for sun salutation and get other varieties of sequences, including body images of people (such as the one above) instead of stick people. Wish me well on my yoga journey. Namaste.

Post Script: I also want to restart my tai chi practice. I took a tai chi class while enrolled in college for one semester. It proved very relaxing and I would love to learn all 106 poses. My godmother practices tai chi. Perhaps I will look to her for instruction.

  1. I've just started yoga as well (well in July)!!! I can't afford a class so I wake up most mornings at 5 to do it with a program on TV. I would prefer a class with someone to correct my posture, but until life settles down, this is it for me. Since I have a library card now I might take you up on using the books. They probably have more info about physiological effects and other things that I would find interesting.
